Jenie M. Smith, MD
Dr. Smith comes to Maine from the Midwest. She completed her medical school training at the University of Minnesota, and did her residency training in Minneapolis, where she completed fellowships in Nephrology and in Critical Care.She has been with Nephrology Associates since 2000.She currently serves on the Maine Medical Association Executive Committee and is currently Chairperson of the Department of Medicine at Central Maine Medical Center. She lives in Auburn with her husband, Peter Frewen.
Cynthia A. DeSoi, MD, FACP, FAAP
Dr. DeSoi has practiced in Maine since 1991. She completed medical school at the University of Rochester, then completed residency and fellowship training in Chicago, with special training in Pediatric Nephrology in addition to adult Nephrology. She is Board certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Nephrology. In addition to general care for patients with kidney disease, her interests include medical treatment of kidney stones and pediatric kidney disease.
Outside of her practice, Dr. DeSoi serves on the Board of Medical Mutual Insurance Company of Maine and currently holds the position of Secretary. She is a member of the Claims committee, and is also the Board liaison for Risk Management. Her passions include caring for the 700 resident children at Pwoje Espwa in Haiti, where she is Medical Director. She travels several times each year to Southern Haiti to work, leading volunteer medical teams from across the US.

Matthew Pyenta, DO
Dr. Pyenta is a native of Michigan. He earned his medical degree at the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine residency and General Nephrology Fellowship training at St. John Detroit Riverview Hospital in Detroit, MI. He has special interest in renal transplantation patients and he has completed a Transplant Nephrology Fellowship at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology
Andrew J. Thornton, MD
Dr. Thornton has been practicing nephrology in Maine for the past several years. He completed medical school at Boston University. He trained in an Internal Medicine Residency and a Nephrology fellowship at Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, American College of Physicians, Maine Medical Association, the Renal Physician’s Association, and the National Kidney Foundation.Dr. Thornton is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He volunteers with the Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) with the National Kidney Foundation—a program designed to screen for and detect occult kidney and blood pressure problems. Dr. Thornton serves as Medical Director for the Umbagog Kidney Center in Wilton, ME and is active treating patients with all forms of kidney disease. |
Janet P. Cutter, FNP
Janet is a graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and received her BSN and MSN from the University of Southern Maine summa cum laude. She is board certified by the American Nurse’s Credentialing Center in Family Practice and is a Member of the Maine Nurse Practitioner’s Association.Prior to working at NACM, Janet was employed at SMRMC as an FNP in psychiatry and substance abuse, caring for patients on an in-patient and out-patient basis. Previous to her NP experience, she worked for several years as a RN in the OR, PACU, PAT, Minor Surgery, Endoscopy, Day Surgery, Pain Clinic and the NEOB harvesting hearts, bone and fascia.
Avinash Ghimire, MD
Dr Ghimire did his Internal Medicine Residency and Nephrology Fellowship at Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME. He was also involved with basic science research at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute in Scarborough working on acute kidney injury research as part of his Fellowship. His clinical interests are in the area of acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease care, dialysis care and kidney stone medical management. He is Board certified in Internal medicine and Nephrology. |
